XXIX MARIST SAMOA INTERNATIONAL SEVENS RUGBY TOURNAMENT & MARIST INTERNATIONAL SPORTS-FEST WEEK 2017

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  1. TITLE
    Marist Samoa International Sevens Rugby Tournament and Marist Samoa International Sports-Fest Week 2017

  2. EVENT TYPE
    The weeklong event is a celebration of Marist Samoa’s contribution to the development of sports in Samoa and will feature a Touch Tournament, Netball/Rugby and Boxing Clinics plus the finale of the week which will be the 29th Marist Samoa International Sevens Rugby Tournament which will see international teams competing for the Samoa’s Premier 7’s Champions Tag.

  3. EVENT DATES & DURATION
    The Marist Samoa International Sports-Fest Week 2017 will commence on the 11th – 19th February 2017.

  4. FREQUENCY OF EVENTS
    The idea for a Marist Samoa International Sports-Fest Week was discussed during our club’s 45th Anniversary Celebrations last year. Following the revamp of the Marist St. Joseph’s Sports Club 2016, the Organizing Committee is looking at ensuring the Sports-Fest will be a regular event on the Calendar of Events here in Samoa. However, our International Sevens has been around for many years. The Club has hosted 28 tournaments in the past.

  5. EVENT GOAL / PURPOSE / OBJECTIVE
    The purpose of the Marist Samoa International Sports-Fest Week is celebrate the contribution of the Marist Samoa Community to the development of Sports in Samoa, especially rugby and boxing which were introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers. We also aim to raise funds to help us sustain our development work in Sports for Samoa. We believe that developing the grassroots in many sports will lead to success stories. We aim to sustain the work of our forefathers over the past 40 years and ensure we continue the Marist mission to Samoa.

  6. CONFIRMED OVERSEAS TEAMS
    To date, we have received confirmation of two teams from New Zealand.

  7. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS
    It is estimated the Marist Samoa International Sports-Fest Week will attract over 10,000 people to witness all events scheduled over the week. With our partnerships with other stakeholders a strong possibility of 35,000 Samoans residing overseas will view the celebrations daily.

    Our competitions will attract over 1,000+ players and management involved in all our competitions.

  8. EVENT LOCATION
    Our events are scheduled to take place in the following locations here in Samoa;

    ACP Marist Samoa Stadium, Lotopa  This particular stadium will feature our Marist Saints Rugby League Competition. Eight teams will compete in this sport including one team from Savaii. This tournament is held in partnership with Rugby League Samoa who will also sanction the one-day tournament.

    Infront of Government House  The Government complex in Apia will be the site of our parade which will feature all stakeholders involved with our Competition.

    Gym 1, Tuanaimato Fight for Marist II will take place at Gym 1. Boxers from Tonga, Fiji and American Samoa will compete against our elite boxers. The fight will also host the finals of our own local boxers as well as corporate boxers.

    Gym 3, Tuanaimato The Netball Tournament for the first time will be coordinated under our partnership with the newly established Samoa Institute of Sports. There will also be eight teams vying for the top prize. The one-day tournament will be sanctioned by its mother body, Netball Samoa.

    Hockey Field, TuanaimatoThis particular stadium will feature our inaugural Marist Saints International Touch Tournament. This particular tournament will host an Open Men’s and Mixed Team pools. The competition will run for two days and will feature all quality players here in Samoa and overseas.

     Apia Park International Stadium The Apia Park International Stadium will be the home of our 29th Marist Samoa International Sevens Tournament. It is known as the premier 7’s tournament on island and also the Oldest Competition in Samoa. The tournament will feature 24 of the best 7’s team here in Samoa and the region. The Competition will also feature emerging players of Samoa who will continue to represent Samoa in the international stage.

  9. EVENT BUDGET
    From an international sevens tournament to hosting four other sports alongside has taken the organisation of such an initiative to an estimated budget of ST$400,000. The budget is also supporting international officials for each sport.

  10. % FUNDED BY ORGANIZATION
    We are a non-governmental organization, charitable trust, not-for-profit organization and we are relying heavily on sponsorship to fund this event. Our contribution is our in-kind services and time which is equivalent to SAT$135,000.

  11. DIRECT AUDIENCE
    The Sports-Fest will be take place in front of an estimated 10,000 people throughout the duration of the celebrations.

  12. INTERNATIONAL BROADCAST
    The Celebrations will be aired (delayed coverage) on TV1 which has 35,000 registered online viewers.

  13. INCOME TAX DEDUCTION
    All donations/sponsorships to our Sports Club to run the Marist Samoa International Week will be tax deductible for income tax purposes in terms of Section 27(3) (a) of the Income Tax Act 2012.
